Reclaiming “Conservative”
This may sound funny coming from me, but those of you who know me best understand that I’ve tried to be as conservative as I can over the years. It’s important to note that “Conservative” is not a party, but a philosophy.
When I first started running for the office of State Representative, several people asked me why in the world would I run as Republican in an area that was predominately registered Democrat, and that was an easy answer. Although I have friends and family who were and are registered Democrat, the Republican Party platform was—and still is—the best fit with my beliefs and the conservative philosophies I hold dear:
• Government is the best when it is the least.
• All innocent life, whether born or unborn, is sacred.
• The family unit of a man, woman, and child is the preferred model, and although this is not always possible, we should hold this ideal out as the best hope for our society.
• The knowledge that there is a God. Although we do not want a theocracy, our Constitution clearly indicates the importance of God as part of our lives, including our government and society.
Conservatives must never allow our voices to be silenced, for if that time comes, this nation will decline or even perish forever.
